The Roots Run Deep

Fontanicchio stands on the path Hannibal marched in 217 BC, on his way to the shores of Lake Trasimeno, where his army ambushed the Romans in the morning fog. It was one of the most decisive battles of the ancient world, and the memory still lingers in the names of nearby places. The roots here run deeper still, back through the Etruscans to the Roman era, layered into the ground beneath your feet.

Lake Trasimeno

Five minutes from the villa, the fourth largest lake in Italy stretches out beneath the hills, ringed by villages and dotted with three islands you can reach by ferry. Spend a day sailing, wander an island at your own pace, or simply watch the light change over the water from shore.

Worth the Day Trip

Etruscan Cortona and its ancient walls. Perugia, Umbria’s capital of art and medieval streets. Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. Montepulciano and Montalcino for their celebrated wines, Siena for its Palio, and Florence for the Uffizi and the Duomo. Centuries of history, all within easy reach.

Close to everything, yet a world away, Fontanicchio is the ideal base for the getaway you’ve always imagined.
